Macron's Philosophical Education

Emmanuel Macron ruminates on his apprenticeship in philosophy. I look forward to a transcript of his first meeting with Donald Trump. (h/t Jake Soll)

An impressive interview. Needless to say, one can hardly imagine, alas, the current American president displaying such intelligence and lucidity.

One can hardly imagine ANY modern American president capable of thinking philosophically about politics. The last one was Woodrow Wilson. Macron is polite. I am sure he can handle even a boorish clown like Trump.

Ricoeur acknowledges the 22 year-old Macron in his book, La mémoire, l'histoire, l'oubli (2000) as the person "à qui je dois une critique pertinente de l'écriture et une mise en forme de l'appareil critique de l'ouvrage".

I think it is interesting that Macron was attracted to a philosopher who was the anti-thesis of the maîtres penseurs and gurus of the period 1960-1990---Foucault, Deleuze, Derrida e tutti quanti---and who was in fact of the previous generation (born 1913), the generation of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. Just as he was formed and educate by his grandmother...
